FAQs
What are they?
Biostimulators are skin tightening cosmetic procedure that works by injecting a biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production. Once collagen build-up has occurred, the biodegradable particles are absorbed by the body, leaving just the natural collagen support structure.
Skin aging involves a loss of collagen and thinning of elastic fibres (elastin). Elastin and collagen form the ‘scaffolding’ of the face and as they diminish with age, we lose structure and elasticity in the skin resulting in facial laxity or ‘sagging’, fine lines, and wrinkles. Biostimulator Injections can help replenish the lost collagen and elastin.
As a result, patients are left with fine lines, wrinkles and skin folds improved.
It can also be used to improve facial volume and treat lipoatrophy, which is facial wasting, or loss of facial fat. Biostimulator treatments can be used on many areas of the face and body including cheeks, temples, lower cheeks, jawline, neck and décolletage. Unfortunately, due to Australian regulations, we are not allowed to name the product used.
Who is suitable?
Biostimulators are designed for people who wish to restore volume in their face. They are a great alternative to volume loss treatments or in combination with other cosmetic treatments they produce even more effective results. Areas that work well with these include temples, jowls and cheeks.
Contraindications for these injections include:
Pregnancy and breast feeding
Allergies to lidocaine
Certain bleeding disorders
Is there downtime?
Most patients may experience some form of bruising, this varies from patient to patient and depends on the area being treated. Swelling directly after is evident also.
Is it painful?
We mix the substance with lidocaine to help reduce the pain, we also apply a topical anaesthetic cream 1 hour prior to injecting to enhance comfort levels more so. When the numbing wears off after the procedure most patients experience some mild discomfort – cold compress can help to alleviate this.
How many treatments are required/how many vials?
Results vary depending on your age, the area and skin condition treated, the technique and the amount of product used. Individual results may vary. In most instances, multiple sessions, usually 2-3 sessions at 4-6 weekly intervals are required for optimal correction. Individual responses vary, so the exact number of treatments sessions required cannot be predicted with complete accuracy. Each session usually required 1 vial of biostimulator – this will cover the entire face.
How long will it last?
Results of this treatment can last a couple of years, many patients will have booster treatments of 1 vial every 12 months to keep on top of their results and optimise longevity of the product.
